We had a crisp, clear morning for todayās bird walk at Vincent DiFilippo Nature Preserve, and the birds did not disappoint! With eleven enthusiastic observers, we covered 1.88 miles over two hours and logged an impressive 29 speciesĀ and 189 individual birds.
š³ Habitat Notes
The preserveās mix of riparian woodland, open fields, and wetland edges gave us a diverse set of sightings. The leaf litter and bare branches made for excellent visibility, and the cool temperatures kept birds active throughout the walk.
š¦ Notable Sightings
American RobinĀ ā 64 individuals, dominating the morning with their cheerful calls and active foraging
Eastern BluebirdĀ ā 9 seen, glowing against the late autumn backdrop
Pileated WoodpeckerĀ ā 2 observed, always a crowd favorite with their powerful flight and loud calls
Yellow-bellied SapsuckerĀ ā 1 spotted, a seasonal treat as they move through the region
Great Blue HeronĀ ā 1 seen, standing sentinel at the waterās edge
Red-winged BlackbirdĀ ā 1 lone male, a surprise this late in the season
Winter WrenĀ ā 1 seen, a tiny dynamo flitting through the underbrush with its tail cocked high
š§ Behavioral Moments
We watched a Belted Kingfisher hover and dive with precision, and a Winter Wren darted through the underbrush with its tail cocked high. The Carolina Chickadees and Tufted Titmice were vocal and cooperative, giving everyone great views.
