Field Report

Morning Activity

We started the morning with familiar voices. American Robins, Song Sparrows, and a very energetic Carolina Wren set the tone. Tree Swallows and Northern Rough winged Swallows worked low over the water and high overhead as the first insect hatch picked up. A Gray Catbird called from the brush line and an Eastern Bluebird sang from cover but stayed out of sight.

Woodpecker Highlights

Big Spring delivered excellent woodpecker activity. We recorded Red headed, Red bellied, Downy, Northern Flicker, and a single Pileated Woodpecker. The Red headed pair gave bright, unmistakable views and performed their duets throughout the walk. The Pileated offered a distant but powerful call and a brief look high in the trees.

Raptors Overhead

By mid morning the thermals were building and we watched Black Vultures, Turkey Vultures, and two Red tailed Hawks circling above the creek. One Red tail dropped low enough for us to see the warm red tail glowing in the soft sunlight.

Water and Wetland Birds

The spring run held Wood Ducks and Mallards, and we had three Great Blue Herons flying overhead as they searched for their next fishing spot. The clear water and open sightlines made these some of the easiest views of the day.

Small Bird Moments

Blue gray Gnatcatchers moved nonstop through the willows. A Ruby crowned Kinglet flashed its crown for a moment. White throated Sparrows lingered in small groups and American Goldfinches showed bright yellow in the morning light. An Eastern Towhee called from the brush with its clear drink your tea rhythm.

A Strong Start to Spring

Big Spring continues to be one of the most reliable and accessible birding locations in Cumberland Valley. The mix of habitats, easy walking, and consistent bird activity make it an ideal place to build skills and enjoy the season.
