A Night of Curiosity, Community, and Conservation

Twenty‑five guests joined us at the historic Two Mile House for an evening exploring how birds, native plants, and backyard ecology shape the stories our landscapes tell. The setting — a beautifully preserved 1820s limestone tavern surrounded by six wooded acres — created the perfect backdrop for a conversation rooted in local nature and community engagement.

What We Explored

Local Birds & Habitat Needs   Guests learned how the presence (or absence) of certain bird species reveals the health of the land around us.

Native Plants & Backyard Ecology   We discussed how plant choices influence birds, insects, and the broader food web — and which native species make the biggest impact in the Cumberland Valley.

Reading the Landscape   Attendees practiced seeing their yards and neighborhoods through an ecological lens, identifying subtle clues about habitat quality.

Homeowner‑Friendly Conservation   Everyone left with practical, achievable steps to make their property more wildlife‑friendly — no special equipment or scientific background required.

A Conversation, Not a Lecture

The event stayed true to its purpose: an accessible, inspiring conversation designed to leave people curious rather than overwhelmed. Guests asked thoughtful questions, shared personal stories, and connected over a shared interest in local nature.
